
History of Cullera
Thanks to a long histroy Cullera has a rich and diverse cultural and artistic heritage. The city was first settled over 25,000 years ago. Between the Romans, Muslims, Pirates and Spanish the city has lived a unique history, with four different eras.
Romana Era
Cullera was an important port and commercial center for Roman forces in Spain. The Romans built a fish-salting factory as part of the city’s port infrastructure.
Islamic Era
During the Islamic Era the city was named Qulayra (Highest peak). During this period Cullera experienced a grand economic and social transformation.

Middle Ages
During the Middle Ages Cullera developed a network of military structures to defend and protect the city from frequent pirate attacks. The Torre de Marenyet was built in this era as part of that defensive infrastructure. Cullera also built the Church of the Saints Juan (Iglesia de Santos Juanes). It was the only church in Cullera between 1248 and 1953.

Modern Era
In 1903 the market of Cullera was built. It was built in the Valencian Modernist style, and was the work of Valencian architect Luis Ferreres Soler. Starting in the 1970s Cullera began its development as one of Valencia’s top tourist destinations.
